Reporting to the Director of Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS), the Associate Director will work with colleagues in SAASS to meet the academic support needs of student athletes in men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball. Specifically, the Associate Director will oversee athletic academic counseling for student athletes in assigned sports, contribute to the eligibility process and procedures for all student athletes in all sports and serve on campus committees as appointed by the Director of SAASS.
Provide Administrative Oversight—
• Provide academic support for student athletes in assigned sports. • Assist assigned student athletes with academic, personal, and career development. • Monitor student athletes’ academic performance. • Monitor study hall requirements for student athletes in assigned areas of responsibility. • Work with coaches, academic advisors, and other University constituents to facilitate academic success of assigned student athletes. • Assist in determining GPA and hours required to sustain eligibility for continued enrollment and/or for competition. • Monitor class schedules of assigned student-athletes and help to resolve any problems or conflicts. • Collaborate with college-based academic advisors to ensure that appropriate courses will count towards degree and eligibility to compete. • Distribute mid-semester grade reports to the faculty of all student athletes to check class attendance and academic progress. • Regularly contact faculty of student athletes after mid-semester grade reports are returned to insure that students are complying with corrective measures.
Monitor Eligibility of Assigned Student Athletes—
• Serve as liaison to registrar & athletic compliance offices, working on issues related to eligibility of all student athletes and on the transfer process for transfer student athletes. • Work with SAASS staff to resolve eligibility issues/concerns/needs.
Participate in Recruiting Student-Athletes—
• Assist in all facets of the recruiting process for student athletes in assigned areas. • Arrange meetings with Academic Deans, Department Heads, Faculty/Departmental Advisors for recruits in the assigned sports. • Assist with presentations regarding SAASS to recruits and families during recruiting visits. • Establish contact with each incoming freshman student athletes during the scheduled orientation day.
Oversee Accurate and Timely Record Keeping— • Keep accurate and up to date records of interactions with assigned student athletes. • Maintain active and inactive files on assigned student athletes with documentation of all contacts, copies of academic success plans (where appropriate) and copies of grade reports. • Maintain files of all study hall hours and support services. • Keep up to date copies of all student schedules and grade reports for official reports and information to other offices.
Other— • Support, enforce and ensure compliance with all University and departmental policies and regulations. • Perform other duties as assigned.
Earned Master’s degree; or Bachelor’s degree and training and experience equating to an advanced degree. Experience in counseling, advising, and providing academic support to collegiate student athletes. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with individuals from various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with many constituencies, and able to work in a time-sensitive and occasionally pressured environments. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information with discretion and according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines. Excellent time management, attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent understanding and foresight of impediments to student athlete eligibility and/or graduation of student athletes. Excellent communication skills.
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Experience in the use of technology to accomplish academic or administrative tasks.
