Position Title: Academic Internship, Academic Services
Duration of Assignment: September 5, 2017 (1 Year)
Academic interns for academic services will work with the Assistant Athletic Director of Academic Services and the Academic Services staff to develop academic support plans for individual student-athletes on their respective caseloads while also gaining hands-on experience with academic advising, eligibility, and NCAA rules and regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the academic services staff, identifying academic concerns of specific student-athletes.
Incorporating learning strategies and learning tools offered by the academic services unit to meet the needs of individual student-athlete.
Continuing monitoring and assessing of student-athlete academic progress.
Promoting and fostering academic integrity and accountability.
Promoting and fostering appropriate communication skills.
Promoting and encouraging the use of university resources (i.e. Drahmann, HUB, and Career Services).
Encouraging personal reflection and growth.
Assisting student-athletes in academic goal setting and achievement.
Documenting academic progress in weekly and quarterly individual reports.
Assist in Academic Advising:
Assist academic services staff in helping student-athletes navigate the SCU Registrar’s Course Avail system in order to search for classes and determine appropriate courses to meet degree requirements.
Using quarter calendars and weekly trackers to help student-athletes develop time management.
Assist with eligibility tracking. Interns will gain an understanding of NCAA rules and regulations as they pertain to continuing eligibility requirements. Interns will assist the academic services staff and compliance unit with tasks that relate to continuing eligibility.
Interns will also participate in FERPA and Confidentiality Training upon the start of the internship program.
Interns will learn the department, university, and NCAA policies as they pertain to rules and regulations, academic integrity, compliance, and confidentiality.
Participate in monthly Professional Development Learning Sessions that will be sponsored by the Academic Services Unit.
Maintain an appropriate schedule in collaboration with their supervisor.
Maintain a regular schedule of academic meetings with their caseload of student-athletes.
Make recommendation based on student-athlete assessment and academic progress.
Interns will be able to participate in event planning for annual events such as faculty appreciation nights, student-athlete etiquette dinner, and more.
Interest in NCAA Academic Services.
The Academic Internship will be a 12-month assignment.
Interns will be allowed to work 20 –hours per week unless specified by supervisor (for special circumstances, additional hours can be provided).
Interns will not work during university and staff holidays.
