Reporting to the Director of the Career Development Program for the NBPA/NBA Joint Labor-Management Cooperation and Education Trust. This program provides NBA players with the essential skills, education and resources to achieve success in their off-the-court careers, both now and in the future.
Provide educational and career guidance and assistance for players
Assist players in their growth and development by constructing educational plans that are compatible with their life & transitional goals.
Educate and advise current and former players on the Tuition Reimbursement Plan, including plan eligibility for both the player and the educational program, as well as pre-approval and assistance during the reimbursement phase.
Serve as primary liaison to external benefits provider
Identify appropriate schools, courses, certificate programs and other educational opportunities for players
Compile and analyze player information to inform department and individual player planning/advising
Track players’ academic advancement
Maintain accurate academic records, develop statistical analysis of academic success or challenges and provide data as requested regarding the academic progress of players on an ongoing basis.
Develop and maintain database of academic advisors at universities, trade schools and other appropriate educational institutions. Maintain database of degree completion programs and contacts.
Develop industry specific resource lists including information on books, publications/articles, classes, podcasts, social media, conferences, and degree programs for Programs and individual requests
Implement assigned Career Development Programs
Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned
Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree in related field preferred
Experience in academic or career advising, especially with athletes strongly preferred
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Exceptional networking, research and writing skills
Ability to connect interests with education and career planning
Understanding of player needs and concerns
Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel; Google Drive platform
