Salem State is an affiliate member of the Little East Conference for the sports of field hockey and men’s lacrosse. The Salem State Vikings athletic program hosts 15 intercollegiate sports. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, in the Office of the Executive Vice President, the Director of Athletics leads with vision and direction all aspects of the University’s competitive NCAA Division III program. The Director is responsible for the administration and supervision of all phases of intercollegiate athletics at Salem State University including developing and balancing the budget, overseeing professional and coaching staffs, cultivating donors, maintaining athletics facilities, strategic planning, public and community relations, and advancing a high level of integration of the athletics program into the overall student experience. The Director of Athletics is also responsible for ensuring strict compliance with NCAA rules and regulations as well as all applicable conference rules. It is expected that the Director will build and maintain collaborative and positive relationships within the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Life as well as with academic affairs, admissions, institutional advancement and alumni affairs, and marketing and public relations to ensure that student-athletes are successful both in the classroom and in athletic competition. Additionally, the Director works collaboratively with the chair of the sport and movement science department to insure the proper coordination of programs. The successful Director of Athletics will possess either a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of eight years of leadership, management, supervisory, and budget administration experience within an intercollegiate athletics program OR a master’s degree and demonstrated progressive experience leading a complex intercollegiate athletic program. The successful candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of intercollegiate athletics administration, student-athlete development, and NCAA compliance within a Division III environment. The new Director will possess a genuine understanding and commitment to NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics philosophy as well as demonstrated success in leading and administrating a comprehensive intercollegiate athletics program including operations, human resources, facilities, compliance, and financial management. The Director will also be expected to recruit and develop outstanding staff and coaches, will possess an enthusiasm for institutional advancement efforts, an understanding of public relations principles and practices in representing athletics, and have an in-depth knowledge of current issues and best practices in higher education and intercollegiate athletics.
