The Academic Advising Program (AAP) serves approximately 16,000 undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The mission of the AAP is to partner with students to create meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their career and life goals. The AAP supports a diverse population of undergraduates through an ongoing developmental journey toward graduation that empowers them to take responsibility for their education while becoming globally aware, ethical leaders. The Assistant Dean reports to the AAP Associate Dean and Director.
The Assistant Dean is a hybrid role that provides co-leadership for advising of all student-athletes in the College of Arts & Sciences and the day to day co-leadership of either the Natural Sciences and Math division or the Social and Behavioral Sciences division. This position is split 50/50 between providing oversight of student-athlete advising and general advising in the College of Arts & Sciences. This takes place in multiple advising locations. In both roles, leadership responsibilities are shared between two Assistant Deans.
The Assistant Dean’s academic advising responsibilities for both student-athletes and other students in the College of Arts & Sciences include guiding and supporting students on defining their educational goals and objectives, advising students with regard to their curriculum and academic planning, helping them understand the process for selecting courses to satisfy degree requirements, and identifying challenges that may impede their academic progress. The Assistant Dean also interprets and explains complicated University policies and procedures and makes referrals to appropriate support services.
In addition, their other AAP divisional and departmental leadership responsibilities include addressing complex student concerns and personnel issues, developing new and innovative solutions to advising challenges, assisting with new advisor training, and providing leadership in situations that are truly exceptional and require administrative intervention. The Assistant Dean supervises advising personnel on their AAP division, including evaluating performance. All positions at this level serve on appropriate departmental and University committees, working groups and task forces, as well as represent the department at appropriate educational events.
The Assistant Dean position is a 12-month, full-time, permanent, EHRA Non-Faculty position.
