Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) Internship
The Student-Athlete Support Services department at Northeastern University strives to foster well rounded educational and athletic experiences for student-athletes grounded in excellence, integrity and commitment. To support and encourage the development of successful student-athletes, we actively promote self-reliance, inclusion, community engagement, and academic investment, while keeping with the mission of the university and division of student affairs.
The Intern will assist the SASS staff with day-to-day operations and will be responsible for providing support for the SASS program. The objectives for the Northeastern Student-Athlete Support Services internship program are to:
1. Provide an interactive, hands-on experience for the candidate which gives them experience working with students of all levels of college preparation and on varying athletic teams
2. Facilitate productive interaction between candidate and coaching staffs
3. Expose candidate to the operational methods and driving philosophy of division I intercollegiate athletic academic support; this includes experience with implementing learning strategies in group or one-on-one student settings
4. Encourage candidate to think critically and offer new ideas for athletic academic support
5. Allow candidate to complete internship with the experience and confidence to move forward in the athletic academic support profession if they so wish
The individual will be assigned responsibility for 1 varsity team, under the supervision of a full-time SASS staff member, and will keep complete and accurate records for the designated team. In addition, the individual will serve as success coach for approximately 15 additional student-athletes from teams not under their supervision. The position includes assisting with certification of progress toward degree and continuing eligibility at the end of each academic semester, the processing of semester grades each term, academic advising, assistance with course registration, academic monitoring through progress reports, and will serve as study hall supervisor 2 evenings per week. The intern will assist SASS staff with administrative duties, specifically tutoring payroll, and additional projects as assigned to implement a successful academic support program.
Estimated Time Allotted to Job Duties:
Individual Student Meetings (maintain proper documentation, track academic progress, and liaise with major advisors): 50%
Administrative Tasks and other duties as assigned: 20%
Tutoring Payroll: 15%
Evening Study Hall Monitor: 15%
BA/BS required; MA/MS/MEd degree preferred. Preferred qualifications include previous academic advising experience, knowledge of Northeastern University academic programs and NCAA academic rules and regulations, past involvement as a student-athlete or within intercollegiate athletics, as well as an interest in pursuing a career in student-athlete support.
One (1) ten (10) month commitment starting August 1, 2017 and ending on May 31, 2018. This is a full-time internship (30+ hours per week) that will require the ability to work some nights.
A taxable stipend of $2,000 per month for the 10-month commitment. This position is not benefits eligible.
The Intern will work closely with all members of the SASS staff, with supervision under the Senior Athletic Academic Specialist, along with members of the academic advising community and athletic administration (including the coaching staffs).
