The Southland Conference, based in suburban north Dallas, and serving 13 NCAA Division I member institutions in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, is seeking applicants and nominations for the position of Deputy Commissioner.The selected candidate shall assist the Commissioner in all league operations, including NCAA governance and affairs, oversight of compliance and academic services, and serving as a staff liaison to the Conference’s administrative leadership groups, including the presidential Board of Directors, the operating Advisory Council, and subgroups such as faculty athletic representatives, athletic directors and other senior administrators. The selected candidate will also oversee men’s and women’s basketball operations including, but not limited to, developing competitive and academic success strategies, scheduling, interaction with administrators and coaches, officiating, and senior oversight of the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament. The selected candidate shall also be involved in the guidance and execution of the Conference’s strategic plan, and provide necessary assistance with other championships, financial operations, officiating matters in all sports, external affairs, and other duties as determined by the Commissioner. Travel is required.
A bachelor’s degree is required, and an advanced degree is strongly preferred. A minimum of eight years of accomplished experience in senior NCAA Division I administration at the institutional level, within a conference office, or a comparable and distinguished level of performance in intercollegiate athletics or professional sports is required. The selected candidate shall have outstanding communication skills and a proven background of successful leadership experience. The candidate must be able to think creatively and perform collaboratively with all constituencies, and manage and complete tasks in a strategic and organized manner. The candidate must be able to instruct, monitor and assist Conference staff in a positive team environment, and work productively with institutional administrators, coaches, athletic staff members, and student-athletes. A thorough understanding of NCAA Division I governance and Conference regulations is required, and experience with widely-used computer software and other business technology is necessary.
