Washington State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is accepting applications for the position of Learning Specialist/Academic Advisor (Student Services Coordinator/Advisor 1). This position works with student-athletes with significant learning challenges and/or learning disabilities. The Learning Specialist/Academic Advisor’s primary responsibilities include: academic skill development, individualized support of academic success plans, tracking and monitoring individual progress, and teaching. This position also serves as the University advisor for assigned first and second year student-athletes. The Learning Specialist/Academic Advisor must possess strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective interaction with a diverse population of challenged adult learners.

Minimum Qualifications: Positions require a Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year?for?year basis. Minimum two (2) years of experience working in related area such as advising, tutoring, teaching, or counseling. Demonstrated work experience in learning assessment and developing individual academic success plans.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated success in developing and teaching literacy, learning strategies and study skills. Demonstrated ability to identify and assess individual learning styles; and implement Individualized Education Plans. Advanced degree in special education or education (teaching and learning) or related area. Experience working with academically under-prepared students, specifically student-athletes within an intercollegiate athletic department: time management, organizational strategies, self-assessment, goal setting, and overall tracking of academic progress as a focus. Excellent interpersonal, decision-making, problem solving and teamwork skills in an academic setting. Work experience that demonstrates strong time management, excellent written communication, and strong organizational skills. Demonstrates the ability to work with students, coaches, and administrators in a broad range of situations. Work experience that demonstrates genuine concern and interest for welfare of student-athletes and the ability to work with a diverse student population.
