Academic Advisors serve as a resource for student athletes on matters pertaining to College rules and regulations. In addition, they have a working understanding of NCAA and PAC-12 Conference certification and eligibility requirements for all assigned student athletes. The Academic Advisor in the Athletic Study Center is a unique position: As a resource for student athletes from all undergraduate schools and colleges, the counselor must develop a complex network of working relationships among a broad spectrum of campus-wide units and external agencies (e.g. all College and school counseling units, departmental counselors, Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid, Summer Sessions, Career Center, Housing, NSS, Berkeley International Office, etc.). Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success. These functions must be performed in a high-stress environment where consequences are both immediate and long-range and are highly visible both within and outside the institution. While Academic Advisors do not report to Intercollegiate Athletics, they still work in close consultation and collaboration with coaches and other IA support staff, and require the incumbent to have the ability to adhere to and comply with NCAA, PAC-12, and University rules and regulations.
• Supports student athletes in developing as independent, self-reliant, and successful young adults by encouraging them to integrate, participate, and become vested members in the academic community. • Counsels and assists student athletes (active, inactive, and former including Degree Completion Candidates) towards holistic development, including academic options and alternatives while understanding and complying with University, College, and NCAA rules and requirements. Works with each student athlete to explore and develop different degree plans that meet University, College, and NCAA eligibility requirements. • Provides tailored academic counseling to maximize student athlete potential and academic performance while balancing athletic and personal commitments. • Identifies students with academic deficiencies (including students who are on probation or who are subject to dismissal), counsels students, and recommends appropriate courses of action which may include referral to or collaboration with departments, schools, colleges. Provides feedback and insight (e.g. schedule weekly meetings, recommend appropriate workshops, recommend increased usage of tutorial services, monitor tutorial records for these students, etc). • Liaison with Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and NCAA: team meetings, recruiting new students, and regular communication with coaches. • Coordinates with and makes referrals to campus student services units regarding financial aid, housing, disability diagnoses and accommodations, international student visa compliance, billing and payment services, etc. • Coordinate and produce travel letters and exam proctoring details for assigned teams. • Outreach to other student services offices on and off campus.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling for Division 1 student athletes in their learning, holistic, and career development. • Knowledge of trends and issues facing NCAA student athletes and academically under-prepared students in higher education • High level of organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills. • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of low achieving students. (NCAA, College, Major) • Skill in communicating with persons of various cultural, social economic and educational backgrounds. • Working knowledge of a wide array of College and University regulations, NCAA and Conference eligibility and academic reform regulations, as they relate to the proper counseling of students. • Ability to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership. • Knowledge of FERPA • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets and experience working with student information systems/databases.
Education/Training: • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
• Master's degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience • Former student athlete experience
Salary & Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000.
