Full-time internship: June 17, 2019 - May 15, 2020
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Supervise and monitor student-athletes, tutors, and mentors in daytime and evening structured study hall environments, including individual study and tutor sessions • Work closely with tutorial and mentoring program staffs to set up and oversee group and one-on-one tutorial and mentoring sessions based on student-athlete performance and requests, including daily changes to student appointments • Assist ASPSA Academic Coordinators in creating written reports to articulate student-athlete academic course progress, structured study attendance, and behavior • Determine the academic support needs of an assigned group of student-athletes through regular one-on-one academic meetings and keep accurate records of grades reported • Assist in at least one auxiliary area, including honors/awards, class attendance policy, and USC curriculum • Co-teach University Studies Courses (USC) in fall and spring, which are designed to support first year student-athletes in their transition from high school through the first year of college studies • Assist in engaging student-athletes in the course selection and registration process • Design and present trainings to tutors and mentors on topics related to increasing effectiveness in working with students • Participate in staff trainings on a variety of subjects related to academic support, including APR/eligibility, registration advising, and recruiting • Assist with presentations made to prospective student-athletes during on-campus visits, including attending all game day recruiting events • Coordinate the logistics and programming for the ASPSA Drive-In Conference for academic support professionals • Complete special projects as assigned
Must have completed a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from an accredited college or university, or must have completed all required coursework for master’s degree pending completion of an internship. Must have a minimum of one year of experience supervising young adults in an educational setting.
Must have the ability to navigate a fast-paced and intense environment that requires meeting deadlines for multiple tasks and supervisors. Must have high ethical standards and impeccable personal and professional integrity. Must be able to effectively communicate task and internship-related needs to primary and secondary supervisors as well as other staff members. Must have computer software application skills to develop written reports. Must be attentive to detail and accurate in record keeping. Must be able to teach academic success strategies. Must have conflict management and interpersonal skills that maximize success in communicating with individuals from a diverse background. Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, including regular nights and weekends.
Preference will be given to those who have: • Completed a master’s degree in the fields of education, higher education administration or leadership, college student personnel, psychology, sociology, and/or sport management • A minimum of one year of work experience in an academic support for athletics setting • A sincere interest in athletic academic counseling as a profession • Basic knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, particularly in the areas of initial and continuing eligibility
