James Madison University, a Division I member of the NCAA and Colonial Athletic Association, is seeking a Head Cheerleading Coach. This position is full-time and reports to the Assistant AD for Student-Athlete Leadership Development with a dotted line within Athletics for additional, assigned responsibilities based on the experience of the successful candidate. The position will supervise the Cheer Team/Mascot and have responsibilities in another Athletics department based on the individual skill sets. This position is full time and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
This position will supervise, train and instruct the cheerleading squad and mascot (Duke Dog) to include proper training and performances of squad at all practices and required athletic events. Responsible for supervising part-time assistant cheerleading coach; development and utilization of the spirit team budget; recruiting quality cheer team members and mascots who meet admissions requirements and have the potential to graduate; managing all Duke Dog and Cheer squad appearance requests both on-campus and within the community; serving as liaison to the Marching Royal Dukes, JMU Pep Band and Dukettes dance team; and maintaining proper safety certification.
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree preferred; previous cheerleading coaching experience at the collegiate level preferred; previous experience in marketing/promotions community relations, event management or other areas in a Division I athletic department preferred; demonstrated skills with word processing, graphic design and HTML skills preferred; the ability to coordinate staff and other employees working events simultaneously and the ability to communicate in writing and orally to outside groups and vendors/sponsors is required.
