The Graduate Assistant for Athletic Communications reports to the Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Communications, and assists in communications and public relations efforts for assigned varsity programs, including press releases, media relations, website management, content creation and distribution and event management.
The Graduate Assistant position is a 22-month appointment and acceptance to Northwestern’s Master’s in Sports Administration program through the University’s School of Professional Studies is required. The Graduate Assistant must enroll in at least one course per quarter, including summer quarter. A tuition waiver is provided and will cover up to six courses per year. A monthly stipend is provided. This position does not provide benefits.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Primary communication contact for assigned sports, including assistance with football and men’s basketball under the direction of primary sport contacts.
Coordinate all media relations, event staffing and social media for primary sport assignments.
Preparation and dissemination of press releases, statistical information and digital content.
Update athletics department website in a timely and appropriate manner.
Direct efficient gameday media operations for assigned sports.
Assist in the recruitment and management of undergraduate student staff.
Maintain historical and photo records for assigned teams.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing or related field.
Previous experience with an intercollegiate or professional sports communications department is preferred.
Excellent writing, editing and verbal skills.
Proficient in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
Familiarity with website (Sidearm) editing systems.
Photo and video experience is a plus.
Working knowledge of StatCrew or Genius software.
Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference and Northwestern University preferred.
