About the Department The Matador Achievement Center (MAC) serves the 19 Teams and the 400+ NCAA Division I student-athletes of CSUN. With a close working relationship with Intercollegiate Athletics and the University Administration, the MAC provides the academic needs and services from recruiting visits, course selection, eligibility determination, to and through graduation.
Major Duties Under a general supervision, the Senior Academic Athletic Advisor works in the Matador Achievement Center (MAC), under Academic Affairs, to provide related services for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student-athletes at CSUN. The incumbent is responsible for academic advising of incoming and continuing student-athletes including course selection, graduation planning, referrals to campus resources, knowledge of campus policies and major requirements; works closely with athletic administrators and athletic compliance to complete NCAA transfer evaluations, and is responsible for monitoring and reviewing NCAA Academic Eligibility. Oversees one of the teams and is responsible for its record keeping, team meetings, routine and frequent communication with coaching staffs, and grade progress tracking; identifies and creates an academic support program for the at-risk student population; follows Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws; coordinates structured study/objective-based structured study; and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field. Upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related, is preferred. Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience; including two years of Division I NCAA athletic academic advising. A Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, sports management or administration, education or teaching, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. Experience in NCAA Academic Rules and Regulations, NCAA eligibility determinations and APR tracking, Advising Best Practices, and program oversight experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of Academic Advising for student-athletes as well as thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; the principles of individual and group behavior; individual counseling techniques; thorough knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; and NCAA academic criteria, rules, Academic Progress Rate (APR) and regulations. Ability to: analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals; and operates standard office equipment and software including but not limited to Oracle PeopleSoft, EAB Campus, Jump Forward, and Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Outlook, and Excel).

The salary range for this classification is: $4691 - $6683 per month. The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $4691- $4893, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
HOURS: Full-Time; 40 hours per week; 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday; may include some evenings and weekends.
REG: This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
