The Associate Director has academic oversight for teams as assigned & reports to the Director of Academic Affairs. The Associate Director supervises an Academic Advisor & two Graduate Assistants. This position also will co-coordinate the eligibility certification process, & oversee Project Graduation. The goal of the Academic Center’s team is to provide a student-centered approach to learning, to ensure academic progress towards degree & eligibility requirements, & ultimately to develop a structure for our student-athletes to earn their degree. The Associate Director will serve as the student-athletes' academic advocate.
Personnel Management: Manage a portion of the academic team including Academic Advisor and two Graduate Assistants; Serve as a mentor to the aforementioned academic team; Inform the academic team about SEC and NCAA academic progress requirements; Communicate to academic advisors and coaches the eligibility status of their student- athletes; Direct & coordinate the internship, practicum, & volunteer process from inquiry, selection, scheduling to appointment & evaluation; Perform quarterly and annual reviews of direct reports. (30%)
Student Support:Manage the transfer evaluation process of prospective student-athletes; Create an academic plan that outlines degree completion within four years; Monitor assigned student- athletes' eligibility & communicate their progress to the appropriate constituents; Work cooperatively with college academic advisors in advising student-athletes to meet degree requirements; Provide personal & career advice for assigned student-athletes; Monitor graduation progress & respond to any requests for information regarding student-athletes' degree progress; Assist student-athletes with scheduling of courses ensuring that course schedules are balanced & fit the time & season constraints of the student-athletes; Provide letters of recommendation & submit nominations for awards & scholarships for graduate & professional school; Respond to & initiate faculty communication regarding student-athletes with poor academic progress & work cooperatively to design strategies for improved performance; Formulate academic success plans for student-athletes experiencing academic difficulty; Serve as a mentor to the student-athletes; Inform & advise student-athletes of all SEC & NCAA eligibility requirements; Provide professional level support and programs to student-athletes in accordance with the regulations of LSU, the SEC, the NCAA, HIPPA, and ADA. (30%)
Operations Management: Manage the daily academic operations of those respective teams; Co-coordinate the eligibility certification process with all respective constituents; Manage the course approval process by requesting reports & forwarding to Senior College Counselors; Communicate with coaches regarding any academic functions, policies & procedures; Utilize standard grade report to communicate student-athlete progress to appropriate constituents; Facilitate dissemination of faculty progress reports to coaches & alert them of any student-athletes experiencing difficulty; Work in conjunction with Student Learning & other pertinent units to develop a support structure to enhance learning outcomes; Collaborate with University constituents to market & recruit opportunities to work within the Center; Meet once/week with coaches to report on each student-athlete’s progress in detail including current grades, academic progress & problems, & any concerns; Assist in monitoring study hall; Oversee & coordinate Project Graduation for all returning student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility from inquiry to graduation. (25%)
Other Responsibilities:Participate in the recruitment process by meeting with prospective student-athletes and providing them with information about LSU's academic programs and the Academic Center's support programs; Act as liaison to admission and other campus offices; Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Academic Affairs. (15%)
Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience in post-secondary education.
Knowledge of NCAA and SEC regulations.
Preference given to degrees in counseling, social work, student development, higher education, psychology, or related field.
Special or Physical Qualifications
Demonstrate leadership skills and proficiency in administering academic support programming to prepare student-athletes for life after post-secondary education and demonstrate an understanding of student development.
Exceptional oral and written communications skills.
Excellent conflict resolution, project management, business management, and human relations skills.
Must be willing to work irregular hours, nights, and some weekends.
