ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER  

NCAA Division III Ethnic Minorities and Women’s Internship

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is two-year, 10-month full-time staff position with a preferred start date of August 1, 2022.  The intern will be immersed in all aspects of the daily operations of an NCAA Division III Athletic Conference.  The position reports to the NAC Commissioner.  Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.  A Bachelor’s degree is required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION - 25%

Assist with all aspects of conference operations, including the following:

• Participate in Strategic Planning and related action steps. The conference is in the second phase of developing an updated strategic plan, and the intern will participate in the process including participation in meetings, developing actions steps, and implementing action steps. Action steps will range from communication items, to conference membership, to diversity & inclusion initiatives. Specific duties will be determined based on the interest of the intern.
• Participate in membership recruitment activities.
• Assist with administration of NCAA Conference Grants. This includes monitoring applications, managing the budget, and ensuring compliance with grant rules.
• Observe and learn management of the conference budget. Work closely with the commissioner to plan, monitor, and generally administer the conference budget.
• Observe and learn compliance related topics. Discuss inquiries and violations from campuses, NCAA legislative proposals, and the like with the Associate Commissioner and Commissioner, with the possibility of more involved work depending on the interest and ability of the candidate. Observe or assist with compliance inquiries and developing rules education for conference members. This may include updating or developing handbooks, presentations, social media campaigns, or other creative endeavors.
• Represent the conference at regional and national meetings such as the NCAA Convention, NAC Meetings, and professional development events.
• Athletic schedule development.
• Other duties as assigned.

EXTERNAL & INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS - 25% 

• Work with the Associate Commissioner to implement communication and branding initiatives that develop during the strategic planning process. Projects may include social media activities, logo development, mobile app development, technology enhancements, gameday interviews, championship programs and previews, and more.
• Administration of the NAC website.
• Manage NAC Weekly and Annual Awards Programs. Develop timelines & ballots, manage nominations & voting, select weekly honorees, and publish all awards.
• Promote student athletes and coaches for regional and national honors and publish award winners
• Manage all social media for the conference.
• Develop recommendations regarding the best use of technology for sports communication functions, present information to conference leaders, and implement approved projects.
• Develop conference NIL policy and update conference logo policies.
• Assist with Conference Woman and Man of the Year Awards & NCAA Woman of the Year nominations.
• Work closely with campus SIDs, administer SID meetings,
• Shadow SIDs on both game days and non-gamedays. Ability to shadow numerous professionals in New England within or outside the NAC, if interested.
• Conduct pre-season coaches’ polls.
• Develop and maintain relations with regional and local media.

CHAMPIONSHIP ADMINISTRATION – 25%

• Assist with the coordination of selected Championships to include working directly with Coaching Groups, Sport Chairpersons, and host institutional staff.
• Prepare seeding and bracket information and confirm contest schedule, develop hosting manual, virtual programs, and other championship documents.
• Assist in the administration of championship events on campus or off-campus sites. Participate in coaches’ meetings, serve as administrator on site, and organize the championship awards ceremony including the presentation of awards.
• Order and distribute conference awards.
• Encouraged to volunteer for regional NCAA postseason events.
• Participate in pre-championship conference calls.
• Serve on championship committees for several sports.

SAAC ADVISING – 15%

• Organize and implement SAAC initiatives related to DIII week, mental health, diversity & inclusion, Special Olympics, NIL, and more. Specific activities will be developed through work with the NAC SAAC and strategic planning.
• Assist with advising of the NAC SAAC, plan and schedule meetings, and work with elected leaders to develop meeting agendas, provide direction, and implement initiatives.

CONFERENCE BUSINESS, MEETINGS, & CORRESPONDENCE – 10%

• Assist in the preparation and dissemination of agendas for all meetings of the Presidents’ Council and Athletic Directors Council.
• Assist in the organization and facilitation of all meetings of sports liaisons and committees, sports information directors, athletic trainers, faculty athletics representatives, coaches, and the Conference Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
• Participate in postseason meetings with coaches.
• Assist in the updating, compiling, and distribution of conference bylaws, conference handbook, sport guidelines, directories, calendar, and other conference documents.
  
  

 COMPENSATION:  $28,660 for 10 months, with an additional $3,000 in professional development funds.  This position is funded primarily through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minorities and Women’s Internship Grant program.
