Head Coach, Golf
The Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and recreation is currently accepting
applications for the full-time position of Head Coach for Golf. The successful candidate will understand the mission of Swarthmore College, the role that intercollegiate athletics plays to support it, and will possess a record of successful leadership, preferably as a head coach. The Head Coach will coordinate all aspects of the program including organization, administration, budget management, alumni relations, fundraising, and adherence to Conference policies. The successful candidate will also develop and maintain positive communication with alumni, parents, and friends of the program. Teaching of physical education and an additional responsibility within the department will be expected, as well as other duties as assigned by the director of athletics.
The Head Golf Coach will serve as the head coach for the existing men’s golf program, and will lead the process of starting a women’s golf program, which they will also oversee.
Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor's degree, although strong preference will be given to those who have a master’s degree and head coaching experience.
Candidates will have strong recruiting, teaching, coaching skills, and an ability to build and maintain relationships with student-athletes, faculty, administration, and community. Candidates will possess a record of successful leadership in competitive Golf, preferably as a head coach, and will understand the role of intercollegiate athletics within the educational framework of a highly competitive academic environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Oversee and manage all aspects of the men’s golf program—including, but not limited to:
competition, practice, and team activities; travel; budget management; recruitment of
student-athletes; fundraising; oversight of assistant coaches/staff; scheduling; etc.
Teach Physical Education courses as assigned
Prepare and manage the budget for the golf program
Foster and promote a healthy, inclusive program culture that prioritizes sportsmanship,
integrity, the holistic development of student-athletes, and other core values
Coordinate the scheduling of competition, practice, and activities of the golf program
Work with members of athletic administration when and where appropriate to effectively
manage the golf program
Supervise all individuals within the golf program
Adhere to rules, policies, and regulations of the Department, Swarthmore College, the
Centennial Conference, and the NCAA
Responsible for creating and executing recruitment strategies aimed at building a robust
and competitive roster
Maintain accurate records and follow Departmental procedures in an effective and timely
manner
Promote the mission and values of Swarthmore College and Swarthmore Athletics
Ensures all appropriate safety guidelines and standards are followed during practice,
competition, travel, and all team activities
Support and collaborate with athletic administration, as well as support areas (e.g. Sports
Medicine, Sports Performance, Sports Communications, Equipment Room, etc.)
Demonstrate integrity and high moral and ethical standards in all efforts, actions, and
decisions
Become familiar with campus resources to support student-athletes’ holistic development
Other duties as assigned
Additional Responsibilities:
Cultivate relationships with alumni
Demonstrate internal effectiveness within the Department; support and promote other
sports programs and administrative efforts
Attend departmental meetings and trainings
Uphold College and Departmental policies and standards within the golf program
Ability to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations and to utilize
appropriate problem-solving skills
Mange team equipment in collaboration with the Equipment Room staff
Serve on departmental and College committees as needed/assigned
Coordinate community service, programming, and/or team bonding activities
Qualifications: Required
Bachelor’s degree
5+ years related experience of coaching golf at the collegiate level, or an equivalent
combination of education and experience
Knowledge of sport-specific fundamentals, techniques, and safety rules and regulations
Knowledge of intercollegiate sports, preferably at the Division III level
Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications
Ability to work independently and manage primary aspects of golf program
Understanding of and adherence to NCAA Division III philosophy, policies, and
procedures, as well as those of the Centennial Conference
Ability to communicate effectively with student-athletes, departmental colleagues,
support staff, and various internal and external constituencies
Ability to recruit with highly selective academic and athletic standards on a national
level, instruct, and motivate student-athletes on sport fundamentals
Preferred :
Master’s degree preferred
Head coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate level
8+ years related experience of coaching golf at the collegiate level, or an equivalent
combination of education and experience
Demonstrated experience building and elevating competitive golf programs
Previous experience coaching women’s golf
