75% Learning Specialist • Meet individually with academically underprepared student-athletes to foster academic success • Monitor progress in all classes and communicate progress, issues, and concerns with appropriate stakeholders • Identify gaps in and help build academic skills through discussions, referral to workshops, or other academic resources • Collaborate with academic advisors to determine best course of action for struggling or academically underprepared student-athletes • Teach skills to student-athletes, including but not limited to, exam preparation, note-taking, reading, and time management • Monitor course progress reports
15% LAC liaison with University Disability Services • Administer Learning Strengths Assessment to incoming student-athletes • Coordinate learning disability screening and further testing as needed • Communicate with academic advisors • Assure that departmental process runs smoothly
10% Support the student-athlete first year experience courses (OUE 1086 and 1087) • Lead or assist with discussion sections based on the instructor’s course plan • Support the instructor during lecture sections
Essential Qualifications • BA/BS degree and at least 4 years of related work experience • At least one year of experience in working with underprepared students • Must be able to work weekend and evening hours if necessary • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with students and colleagues across campus
Preferred Qualifications • Special education teacher certification or other related field certification • Experience working with students with learning disabilities • Familiarity with University, NCAA and Big Ten Conference policies and procedures pertaining to academic eligibility, ethical conduct and academic integrity
